460. A Family Romance, by Elizabeth Pollet (read 31 Jan 1953) Began reading this book on 28 Jan 1953 on which date I said of it: "Quite a book. New Directiony indeed. New Directions first published it. Tells of a family: Marjorie & Sally, the daughters, Paul, the sensually alert 6-year-old boy, the repressive father, the nerve-ridden mother. Shocking in its bizarre simplicity.". My comment on Jan 28, 1953: " Reading in A Family Romance. Just through a terrifying incest scene between Sally show more and her father. Her mother started screaming. Sally fled to New York when her father left. The writing is unusually sensitive, reminds me a little of Truman Capote, but at least a woman is writing this." My comment on Jan 30, 1953: " Reading in A Family Romance. Don't quite know what to make of some of those characters." I finished the book on 31 Jan 1953, but made no summing-up comment thereon. show less
