This may be the finest bit of river writing I have encountered, certainly within memory (which at my age is at least a week or two). Kimber's Sketchbook is a collection of essays about fire, food, friends, and many other seemingly mundane but mostly under-appreciated elements of river life. This is NOT a book for hardcore whitewater enthusiasts whose sole pleasures are racing from point to point, hitting the highest rated water, or bombastically exclaiming one's prowess. Rather, these 195 show more pages are for boaters who savor experiences, think deeply about often shallow subjects, and revere (at least sometimes) ideas at least as much as action. I heartily recommend this vintage (1991) assemblage of thoughtful prose about being on the water in the wilderness to all my boating friends. show less
