My high rating for this book comes from the sheer joy of reading it -- perhaps colored by my impending trip to Alaska. Huntington wrote a compelling story of his childhood, his courageous mother, and life in that cold land among the Athapaskans. Huntington gave us a great gift in this autobiography.
Here's what I wrote in 2017 about this read: "Great read re native ways plus modernization in Alask'a interior. Sidney's mom was Athabascan and his dad lower 48 white. He lived to be 100+ and lived along the Koyukuk in traditional ways, in missions as a child, and helped form/grow Galena, AK. His 100 years covered a time of huge transition and there's much to learn in reading it."
For anyone interested in early Alaskan history this is a must read. It is the story of Sidney Huntington (born 1915) and pioneer life on the Koyukuk River in northern Alaska.Huntington's story is well written by Jim Reardon an author of some note that has lived in Alaska well over forty years.
