Theorizing Fandom: Fans, Subculture and Identity (The Hampton Press Communication Series) by Cheryl Harris
A collection of scholarly papers on a subject familiar mostly to the geeks among us -- fandom, in particular fandom for science fiction and fantasy shows (although not restricted to that). Interesting but dated (the research was conducted in the early 90s, before the full effect of the internet could be known). If you have ever wondered why people go to ComiCons, argue vehemently about Kirk vs. Picard, or dress up as Princess Leia, you can find a few speculative answers here.
