Renée Taylor was born Renée Wexler in the Bronx, New York. She worked as a stand-up comic in the New York City nightclub Bon Soir in the 1960s, before breaking into the movies. She had a major role in The Producers (1967) and has since worked in film, television, and theater. In 1965, she married actor Joseph Bologna. She and her husband co-wrote the Broadway hit comedy Lovers and Other Strangers. The couple received an Academy Award nomination for writing the screenplay for the film's 1970 adaptation. They also wrote and co-starred in the romantic comedy Made for Each Other (1971), and won an Emmy for writing the television special Acts of Love and Other Comedies (1973). They co-starred in and directed It Had to Be You (1989), adapted from their play. She is well-known as Sylvia Fine, the overbearing mother of the title character in the CBS-TV sitcom The Nanny (1993). In recent years, Ms. Taylor has guest-starred on How I Met Your Mother on CBS and worked as a voice-actor in the animated feature film Ice Age: The Meltdown, and the animated Fox series Bob's Burgers.
