A wooden doll named Maria Poppet takes a year-long tour through 19th century English social classes, passing through the hands of children who are laborers, nobility, orphans, and middle class as well as various adult merchants and artists. She is made, bought, bartered, lost, found, and gifted.

The prose is as stiff as the doll, with long stretches of description of setting that are sure to bore children waiting for the doll's next change of clothes and owner.

Side note: An inscription in the show more book shows that my wife received this book as a birthday present from her grandfather in 1977. show less
