This book about the Okefenokee swamp is breathtaking, with each page capturing the haunting atmosphere of the wetland. The text is quite lengthy and takes its time with the abundance of bird, reptile, and mammal life to be found there. I appreciate how each animal discussed is placed in its context of habitat, season, behavior, diet, predators, and more, so that the narrative reads closer to a nature memoir than a field guide. Similarly, each illustration depicts the Okefenokee landscape show more with the faithfulness and detail of a field guide but the familiar affection of a local. The experience of the book feels much like floating deeper into the swamp on a slow-moving boat, with plenty of time to take in each new sight. show less
Beautiful, detailed illustrations of the birds and animals and scenes described in the text. It is worth viewing by any adult. Describes the changes across the seasons in a woods. Best loved by readers (or listeners) who are interested in the natural world.
