Katie Marsico’s book, “Alexander the Great: Ancient King & Conqueror” is part of a series entitled Essential Lives. As the back cover of the book explains, “[The] Essential Lives [series] introduces the people who have shaped the world, impacted humanity, and changed the course of History.” Although brief, Marciso gives a good concise history of Alexander the Great and his numerous achievements. Pictures of statues and artwork from this time are used throughout the text to give show more readers a visual of what is being discussed. Marsico only uses two maps throughout the book, the first shows where Alexander was from in regards to Greece and the other shows the vast area that Alexander conquered during his life. The author notes under this particular map that, “He eventually acquired an empire of unparalleled size” (p.38). However the map is small and doesn't do justice to Alexander’s conquests. I feel when discussing Alexander and his life, maps are a key ingredient to show the magnitude of what he accomplished in his short life.

Something I did like about this book is the several access features at the end. Timelines, key facts, additional resources and even a glossary are presented to highlight key pieces of information about Alexander.

With simple phrases and large-print type, this book explores the polar region, one of the most extreme environments on Earth, by following a narwhal through its day as it eats, sleeps, and cares for its young.

This book was so much fun to read. Kids love the photos and references to monsters in pop culture. It keeps their attention and really gives them something to ponder about! It covers legends, the making of monsters, facts, and myths. Draw your own conclusions!

Puget Sound is an informational book on the estuary located in northwestern Washington state. Having never heard of Puget Sound, I was interested in learning what it was, I originally believed it was a type of sound wave. I found this book to very helpful in understanding the importance of Puget Sound and what it means to all that live near it. I also enjoyed the historical background provided for Puget Sound, explaining it's cultural significance in a way that the reader can easily show more understand. The book even delves into how the area is being polluted and suggests ways the reader and tourists can help preverve Puget Sound. The pictures provided in this book to show the beauty of Puget Sound do their job, enticing the reader to want to visit. Overall I enjoyed this book. show less
