The War Within: From Victorian to Modernist Thought in the South, 1919-1945 (Fred W. Morrison Series in Southern Studies) by Daniel Joseph Singal
Does a very thorough job of what the subtitle indicates. Excellent chapters on Faulkner, Allen Tate and the Agrarians in Part Two called "Modernists by the Skin of Their Teeth". Notes (39 pages), Bibliography and Index also of a very high standard. Not only all that, a very accessible style of writing. One of my treasures.
