Short biography
[from Puffins Climb, Penguins Rhyme]
Bruce McMillan helped band this puffin in Iceland for study. He also traveled to Antarctica to observe penguins. Mr. McMillan is the award-winning author and photo-illustrator of more than thirty books for children. In addition to speaking at conferences and elementary schools around the country, he teaches university courses about writing, illustrating, and publishing children's books.

Fascinated by both birds and minimalist verse, his goals for this book were to share the habits and habitats of puffins and penguins and to inspire children to created their own minimalist verse. He lives and watches birds in Shapleigh, Maine.

How the Ladies Stopped the Wind is a story that is based off of a folk tale, about ladies in Iceland who decide to plant trees to stop the wind. There are some bits of humor and great illustrations. I love that it was the women and their chickens who took it upon themselves to stop the destruction that the wind was causing them. It’s a great tale about women who come together and quietly fix things about the weather and its outcome. Not only is this book discussing the powers of wind and show more weather but readers can also learn from the power of collaboration and working together. show less
This is a delightful book, with wonderfully understated humor. It deals with two constants in Icelandic life: the wind, and the sheep that keep any trees from growing. The illustrations fully express the understated humor of the text - I laughed several times when I first read the book, and I keep finding new details I did not notice the first time through. And they couldn't be of any location but Iceland.
The hard-working women of a small Icelandic village get some chickens so they can have eggs -- but the chickens decide they would rather mimic what the women do all day instead of laying eggs! Can the women come up with a solution for this problem?

I like this book for representing another country/culture for young readers, although it's unclear during which time period this is taking place. In addition, I like that the women get to be the protagonists/heroes, although it also is clear that show more tasks in this village are strictly divided by gender lines (which I am less of a fan of, especially for showing to young children). Their plan to help with their chicken problem shows ingenuity, thinking outside the box, and persistence.

The illustrations are a little more cartoony than I usually prefer, but I do appreciate that the women are not stick-figure thin.

Overall, a mixed bag of good things and not-so-good things with this book.

This book creatively takes parts of various instruments and makes each alphabet letter. This book was creative, however I do not feel like this alphabet book would appeal to little kids. However, it would be interesting to use in a music class with older students and have them guess what instrument is portrayed in each picture.
