Nikki Rose is determined to make her way in the publishing industry. She gains a foothold at a prestigious magazine through a friend of the family but when she ends the abusive relationship she makes an enemy. Being told that there is no market for black women Nikki persuades a publisher to take a chance on her to run Sugar, a magazine for the urban woman. however reputation is everything and as Nikki makes waves in the misogynistic society she is now part of, she may lose some of herself on show more the way.
On the surface this is a sexed up version of the base story behind The Devil Wears Prada, however I read it as so much more. Yes, there's the plotline about the woman who doesn't seem to fit in but has talent, there are bitchy colleagues, there's betrayal (and a lot of sex). However, there is also a message about empowerment within the Hip Hop era which really resonates.

This is a novel for the fashionista. Nikki is a young Black woman on the rise immersed in the fashion magazine industry. Although there are some setbacks along the way as the title indicates she is up to the challenges of the cutthroat people in the fashion industry as the novel's title implies. This is not my world, but the book is well written, and I am sure others will enjoy Nikki's empowerment.
