Mr. Lambert, a Chilean, inherited a farm from his father which encompassed 60 square miles, with fields running 500 acres. It supported a community of 1500 people and was self-sufficient. It describes the "carefree, violent life of the Chilean cowboys" (huasos), and journeys through "superbly beautiful wilderness of southern Chile into Patagonia." Life is described in almost "feudal" terms, as was land tenancy in Chile in 1919. The author, though born in Chile, had lived in England since age show more 5. Was educated in Eton and Oxford, and participated in the First WW in the English Army in the Flanders campaign, and as a prisoner of war in Germany, before going to Chile to take possession of the farm, which had been in his father's and grandfather's hands before him. show less
