William A. Sabin was publisher of business books in the Professional Book Group, a division of McGraw-Hill. The author of many articles about style, usage, and grammar, he was also a frequent and popular speaker at professional and academic conferences in the United States and Canada. He supported the plain language movement. A master of the rules, Bill Sabin was also a strong proponent of flexibility, known for urging good writers to trust their instincts. In 1997 he became a year-round resident of Bristol, Maine, and by any standard a confirmed Maniac. - Cause of death

Call me a geek, wonk or whatever, but yes, I read reference books sometimes. Author William A. Sabin presents the trickiest of grammar, usage, formatting, punctuation and style issues in a clear, readable way. I can recommend this book to anyone who wants to sharpen proofreading skills.
The Gregg Reference Manual: A Manual of Style, Grammar, Usage, and Formatting: T by William A. Sabin
I love this reference book, and I live by it at work. The Essays on the Nature of Style at the beginning are well-written and helpful. The rest of the book is pretty well organized, and it’s relatively easy to find things through the index. It’s probably not the best reference for those who aren’t already familiar with grammar rules because you do have to have an idea of what rule you’re looking for in order to find it, but those with some experience will find it very thorough.
In my mid-30s I went back to school for an AAS degree. This manual really sharpened up my already excellent, at the time, editing/composing, transcription skills as a general secretary/transcriptionist. I've notice that their are some changes or editing oversights in today's writing and it makes me think I'd better get an updated copy of this one! Excellent publication to have in the house to assist children with homework too.
Excellent grammar reference. I have a lot of work to do.
