In his 1979 biography, The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt, Edmund Morris chronicles the life of the twenty-sixth President of the United States from his birth through the moment he received news of William McKinley’s death. Morris animates one of the most animated Presidents in such a way that he comes to life for modern readers, with his efforts to live up to his father’s legacy and his flurry of activity coming through. Roosevelt’s wide-ranging interests and erudition stand out above all show more else. Mark Deakins reads this audiobook, replicating Roosevelt’s knickerbocker/Harvard accent and clipped manner of speech in all direct quotes while also capturing the occasional onomatopoetic phrases and other vernacular quotes that Morris brings to his work. An excellent introduction for those interested in TR’s early life and the first of Morris’ excellent trilogy of biographies. show less
