Thank you Net Galley and Storey Publishing for an ARC of Backpack Explorer: Rock Hunt. What a delightful book that focuses on rocks, stones, and pebbles you find in and on the ground. This book would be great for younger readers with an adult assisting and an older elementary student to read and explore on their own. There are the typical pages to inform about the types of rocks and minerals, landforms, and fossils you may find on a walk, but there are numerous portions of the book that are show more special. On many pages, there were questions or directions for the reader to think about and explore with the rock they found. such as "Can you find some heart-shaped stones?" and "Look for rocks the color of sand." There are several scavenger hunts for the reader to enjoy as well as pages to explore rocks you may just miss such as "Black and Gray Rocks" , "Striped and Speckled Rocks", and "Sparkly Rocks". The book encourages the reader to explore and get dirty by looking for unique and special rocks such as ones with an "x" on it or unique patterns. As many children love to pick up and collect rocks, this book provides some guidance and explanations to refine their collections and scientific exploration. show less
I really enjoyed this book there's tons of fun facts and the little scavenger hunts will be fun for kids (or adults) to do. It's a good resource for lots of information on rocks from how they form to the different types great for the little rock hunter you know
This book was so much more than I was expecting. This book could be used with children in so many ways. It can teach them about animals and their particular traits, be used in a drama lesson or in physical education and active play. This is a great book to introduce children to the natural world in a fun and interactive way. They can howl like a wolf, leap like a frog, use their tongue to see how frogs capture prey, see like a bat, and even use a garden house to pretend they have an elephant show more trunk to squirt water and so on. There were so many fun activities that could be used, I can see this book being a resource over and over. Parents and their children could also have a lot of fun with some of the activities listed. Just be prepared for kids to become silly, but that is all part of the fun. The facts in the book will also help children learn about why the animals have particular traits or skills and get them thinking about other animals and maybe even a bit about adaptations. A great book for public, school, classroom and home libraries. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley. show less
This was an interesting and informative children's book about animals. I loved how the illustrations were very appropriate for children while the information about each animal was interesting. My three year old loved the craft ideas and imitating the animal actions and sounds. This is one I would enjoying having in print format.
