Carola Saavedra

Eine Unbekannte, genannt A., schreibt intensive, sehr gefühlvolle Briefe an ihren ehemaligen Geliebten. Doch diese gelangen in die Hände von Marco, der mittlerweile in dessen Wohnung lebt. Statt die Zeilen an den richtigen Adressaten weiterzuleiten, liest er sie selbst und fühlt sich von der Schreiberin immer stärker angezogen.
Wer sich von diesen Zeilen wie auch dem Umschlagtext und dem Cover des Buches nun eine romantische Liebesgeschichte verspricht, wird böse enttäuscht werden. Die show more Handlung bleibt bescheiden, doch dafür liefert die Briefeschreiberin eine extrem detaillierte, introspektive Analyse des Geschehenen, das scheinbar zur Trennung führte. Wieder und wieder führt sie das Erlebte auf's Neue aus - um so den Verlorenen zurückzugewinnen?
Was die Unbekannte im Übermaß zu besitzen scheint, fehlt Marco hingegen fast völlig. Seiner Ex-Frau und seiner dreijährigen Tochter scheint er nur Gleichgültigkeit entgegenzubringen, wenn nicht sogar Abneigung. Auch seiner aktuellen Freundin steht er eher unbeteiligt gegenüber ebenso wie dem Rest seines Lebens. Doch die Briefe lösen in ihm etwas aus, was sein Denken und Verhalten wandelt. Immer stärker ergreift die Unbekannte Besitz von seinen Gedanken und beginnt, sein Leben zu verändern. Und wie bei ihr stehen zusehends die Gedanken Marcos im Mittelpunkt des Erzählten, weniger das äußere Erleben.
Es liest sich nicht ganz leicht, insbesondere gleich zu Beginn die Briefe. Doch je mehr ich mich auf das Buch eingelassen habe, wurde ich von dieser intensiven Art des Geschriebenen gefangen genommen. Obwohl mir dieses Empfinden von A. fern liegt, kam sie mir recht nahe und ich habe mit ihr und ihrem Schmerz und ihren Zweifeln mitgelitten. 'Memory tends to deceive, memory and time and the desire for things to be the way we think they were.'

In his new apartment, recently divorced Marcos starts receiving letters addressed to the previous tenant. Curious, he opens them and then over the course of a couple of weeks he starts to become obsessed with the story behind these letters, signed only as 'A'. As the letters develop, the female writer of these letters explores what turns out to have been a toxic relationship with this other show more man. Her version of events constantly shifts, and the reader starts to question exactly what is truth and what is unreliable memory. Unable to sleep, and becoming increasingly alienated from his ex-wife, daughter and his work, Marcos manages to track down the man to whom the letters are addressed, but the outcome is not what he might have expected.

This is a challenging, engaging novel from the Brazilian writer Carola Saavedra. If you are looking for easy answers then this is not the book for you. The transposition of A's relationship and Marcos' life makes for an intelligent exploration of love, desire and intimacy. But the lack of resolution becomes more and more unsettling; as A plays over certain events again and again, so Marcos feels himself questioning his own priorities. As the novel ends he, and the reader, is left to question what 'meaning' the letters and the events that have unfolded actually have.

Beautifully written, this is a quiet and subtle work of fiction, well deserving attention and a wide audience. 4 stars. show less
