If you are looking for a straight forward accounting of the Battle of Marathon, this is not the book for you. At times reading more like a thesis, the author (a university professor himself) analyses in detail the whys, wheres and whatfores of the reasons for, capabilities of the combatants, location and events of the battle. It is an exhaustive (and at times exhausting) study of the battle, that can at times be difficult to follow through all the byways of academe. However, by the end of show more the book I knew all and more than I could ever want to of the Battle of Marathon. show less
