I picked up this book thinking it was a dime-a-dozen western paperback...I was surprised by what I was reading. It is a piece of historical fiction of the American west shortly after the Civil War with some real and some fictional characters.

You will follow two members, Peyton Lewis and Fletcher Rucker, of the Jesse James gang after the civil war who leave the gang following a bank hold-up and strike out for Texas to start a cattle ranch. You will plod across a Kansas plain in the dead of a show more blizzard and meet interesting characters and evil ones. You will engrossed in a fight with Comanche warriors that you will NOT stop reading.

The characters in this novel are not one dimensional but richly developed and that is what really made this story for me. This is not an action packed gun fight every page but rather a solid story of relationships, courage with action that will rivet you when it happens.

I look forward to tracking down more of Don Wright's novels.
