Wasting Libby: The True Story of How the WR Grace Corporation Left a Montana Town to Die (and Got Away with It) by Andrea Peacock
This is a pretty horrifying book. I did find the narrative to be a bit meandering and repetitive (and also full of typos).
This is an investigative report of the tragic history of W.R. Grace Corporation's disrespect and destruction of people and the environment in a small mining town in northwest Montana. Researched and written by a journalist, this book links an asbestos-vermiculite mining operation http://www.libbyasbestos.org/ and lax state and federal agency oversight to gross corporate coverup, obstruction, and abandonment. Libby has been called the "Chernobyl of the U.S." and remains one of the worst EPA show more Superfund sites in a time when funding for cleanup is uncertain. Lastly the author questions the procedures employed in the cleanup after the World Trade Center terrorist attacks; thousands of tons of asbestos laden fireproofing (raw materials were from Libby's Vermiculite mountain) enveloped the steel support beams of the building. If interested, you can read a review: "Vermiculite, Cancer & Lies" by M. Nijhuis http://healthandenergy.com/vermiculite.htm from Health and Energy. (lj) show less
