Short biography
Claire Baxter grew up in Warwickshire, England, UK, but for more than 20 years has called Australia home. Like many authors, she tried several careers before finding the one she really wanted. She's worked as a PA, a translator (French), a public relations consultant and a corporate communications manager. She took a break from corporate communications to complete a degree in journalism and, more importantly, to find out whether she could write a romance novel—a long-held dream.

Now Claire can't stop writing romance, nor does she plan to give up her fabulous lifestyle for anything. She writes contemporary romantic fiction of all lengths. Her short stories have been published in commercial women's magazines around the world, while her novels have been translated into 20 languages and have finalled in the Romance Writers of Australia's Romantic Book of the Year Award, the Booksellers' Best Awards, the RT Book Reviews Reviewers' Choice Awards and the Cataromance Reviewers' Choice Awards.

Claire lives in the beautiful city of Adelaide in South Australia with her husband, two sons and two dogs. She considers herself lucky to live near one of Adelaide's beautiful metropolitan beaches where she loves to walk and think up stories. And when she's not writing, she's either reading or swimming in her backyard pool—another childhood dream—or even reading in the pool. She hasn't tried writing in the pool yet but it could happen.

Flirting with Danger by Claire Baxter is a must-read. Jasmine (Mac) and Aaron are two of the best drawn characters in recent memory. This is a sweet read with sexual tension, but only steamy kisses and near misses. Where the book excels, and earns its very high marks, are in the exchanges between Mac and Aaron. Both push the other to re-evaluate their lives, their preconceptions, and their goals. Through taking a good look at themselves, they both grow and fall in love. It is a rare book show more that really pushes the envelope in an introspective direction, and the characters are so much stronger for it.

The interactions with the secondary characters only enhances the interactions between Mac and Aaron and bring them more shape and substance. It is easy to see those secondary characters get books of their own and their voices were unique to them, which is always a good thing to see. Plotting, pacing, eureka moments: they all felt natural and organic to the story.

You won't want to miss this one. Let's hope it is the start of a wonderful series.

I’m on a bit of a show business fiction kick at the moment if you haven’t noticed! There are so many wonderful stories that revolve around the glamour, fashion and mystery of what happens behind the camera. Love on Location takes a different aspect of this business – its heroine is a location scout and hero the owner of The Perfect House for a new series. It’s also an Australian setting, which was even more interesting to me because it’s a much smaller industry and I’ve been to show more similar places that are mentioned in the book. Who knows, next time I might just spy some of the talent on offer like Love on Location.

Shayna is a location scout, soon to be manager (don’t worry if you don’t know what they do, there’s an excellent explanation – no Wikipedia required). She’s after the perfect house by the water in Sydney for a new series. She’s found her location, but the owner isn’t willing to give up his house to a film crew. Perhaps if Shayna went out to dinner with him, it could be of use…

Don’t worry; this book is nowhere as sleazy as I’ve just made it sound. It’s a sweet romance (i.e. no steamy-embarrassing-on-public-transport scenes) with a very likeable hero in Lachlan, ex-child actor and son of a famous family, now an architect who shuns the spotlight. (He’s realistically drool worthy – and he designs gorgeous sounding houses). Shayna’s a somewhat troubled heroine, with family issues and the need to prove herself at work to pursue her dream. Even though the pair tries to keep it casual, you know what’s going to happen – and it’s a lovely job as a reader to find out how it does.

Although Love on Location is listed as a novella, it’s a fairly long one. There’s a good set up of the initial tension between Shayna and Lachlan, the relaxing and fun times as they become friends and then as they become an item. I would have liked to have seen the conflict and Shayna’s problems spread out a little more through the book, as the issues the couple had to work through seemed to be close together at the end. There are also some sweet moments as Shayna helps to repair a family rift, which is starkly in contrast to her life as a foster child. This is another thing I’d like to have seen explored more, but I think if all those things were included the book would not only be much longer but lose some of the sweet tone. Love on Location is essentially a book to put a smile on your face while you’re stuck under someone’s armpit on a train (yes, this did happen to me) and brighten up your day.

Firefighters. Set in Australia. Throw in that awesome cover (yeah, yeah, I know. But we all do judge, and you know it!), and seriously, what’s not to love here?

Flirting with Danger is the first book I’ve read by Claire Baxter, but it definitely won’t be my last. I just couldn’t put this one down! I was completely drawn into Jasmine and Aaron’s lives and was in no way ready to leave them when the book was over.

I really enjoyed their progression from coworkers to friends to something show more more. Even though the novel takes place in a relatively short time frame, it never felt as if their relationship was rushed. I could clearly see why certain things were happening along the way in developing the plot, yet the events never felt contrived–very skillfully done.

Both the hero and heroine had a considerable amount of baggage going into their we’re-not-dating relationship, and for the most part it was believable. I thought Jasmine was perhaps a little quick to forgive her mother after so many years, but on the other hand I was glad that she finally did, so am willing to overlook the abruptness. I liked how Ms. Baxter gradually showed us–and Jasmine–just how different the reality of Aaron was as compared to the public image.

All in all, I am definitely looking forward to seeing more from this series. There’s quite a few firefighters left, so I’d love to see them all get their HEAs! (Out of fairness, naturally. Not just because I want to read about hot firefighters. Honest.)

A- for a highly entertaining read.

I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again – I really enjoy the Random Romance series. I know that I’ll get a fun story that’s well written and will make me smile. I’m particularly a fan of the ‘pink ones’ – described as a romantic comedy. Anybody But Him fits beautifully into that description and would in my opinion, make a great movie. It has all the elements of a good rom-com – misunderstandings, quirky characters and a gorgeous love interest. There’s also a dash of show more crime and match making added for extra interest.

Nicola Doyle is forced to return to the country town where she was a teenage laughing stock at the hands of Blair Morrissey. Now a star on the city’s financial scene, Nicola finds returning home to look after her eccentric parents a chore. Fortunately, she has her best friend Lainey to support her – but nobody told her Blair was still in town! Blair seems oblivious to his past wrongs, but Nicola won’t let things go – not even when they are in frequent contact!

I loved the crazy situations that Nicola regularly found herself in that required Blair’s help – they made me laugh, especially the bathroom scene. I also liked the mystery that was happening in the workplace, but I thought it was done and dusted rather quickly (however, this is a novella so maybe I’m in the minority). Nicola’s parents were also a nice light touch – both were infuriatingly funny. Blair also forces Nicola to keep things light – she has a tendency to ruminate over things - and wins the prize for fantastic (but not politically correct) dog name.

Baxter also gets the setting of the country town just right – from the fishing by the river to always running into someone you know.

A sweet romance that has plenty of subplots to keep you entertained. Definitely reading more by Claire Baxter.
