This book started out as the author’s dissertation at the University of London and then was revised for publication by Duke University Press. The author takes issue with the view that Napoleon’s diplomatic service became less professional over time as Napoleon replaced diplomats with yes-men. He finds, on the contrary, that it became more professional, but Napoleon disregarded its advice.
