Another litrpg another difficult review. Eric Ugland's story takes a different tack than most, inserting a colorful character with a shady past into a game world rather than the geek du jour. I had high hopes that the lead's desire for a peaceful life to re-start would take us in interesting directions. Sadly with a few minor exceptions the output was pretty boilerplate. "I don't want to be a hero," became code for a false modesty as our protagonist quickly gained unbalanced abilities and show more worked miracles. The result is an average undertaking.

If you adore litrpg you will probably like this. If you are like me and roll your eyes everytime someone busts out their character sheet, skip it.

The sweary sarcastic banter between the protagonists is the heart of the appeal of this series. Our heroine's back story as a prostitute is not the prurient gimmick that I feared. Similarly, the ghost of her mother is an ingenious device in a story with no other supernatural elements.

The good times continue to roll on for the Good Guys. I’m loving this series just when I was starting to get a little bored of the killing in the fourth dungeon and wishing that they didn’t have four more levels to go, Typhon shows up and I get my wish they are out. It’s like Ugland knew just how much dungeon a reader would enjoy reading, then have a massacre and poof you’re out. I knew Donner would betray Montana, can’t wait to find out Emeline’s story in the next book. show more
Can’t wait, I’m starting book four.

Heir Today, Pawn Tomorrow is the next book the The Good Guys series, and I love the fact that Montana still has no idea what is going on nor does he know anything more about his powers and what to do. I am not a player, have never played a RPG game, but still love the stats and the stress of trying to figure out what to do when something happens and people expect you to know, but you still haven't read your stats or anything in your file. There are times when I want to throttle Montana show more because he doesn't check anything out nor does he read his information, but I think that is part of his charm as well. He bumbles his way through every thing that he does and is shocked when there are dire consequences to his actions. While some things are quite predictable, others come out of left field and are quite surprising which is why these books are fun to read. Looking forward to seeing what he messes up in the third book. show less
