I think this is the first children's picture book review that I have done but I have to say that this book is an absolute delight. The story encourages children to try and not give up, helping them to learn that perserverence will often win the day.

It highlights the difference between mean, selfish behaviour and kind, loving behaviour and makes it clear that everybody benefits by caring.

Plus the illustrations are gorgeous. Wendy Straw is a very talented artist and her drawings are a delight show more to look at. The colours are muted and pleasing to the eye and there is an appealing quality to each page.

The story is told in rhyme which makes it enjoyable to read outloud and the end result is that you want to read it again and again. As my four year old said, when I had finished the story for the first time: "I want more pages."

This is a delightful book and one well worth adding to your children's collection or giving as a gift.

I thought this book could teach a few things to children because it has patterned literature and rhyming in it to catch attention. There are many versions of this kind of story and it teaches children how to count in a fin way with rhyming words and patterns throughout the book. I would read this book to kindergartners.
