Henry Vizetelly (1820–1894)

Having been written in the late 1800's, it was interesting to learn how champagne in particular, and also other sparkling wines were made then. I found the book also interesting, as the author, to write the book, had visited the historic chateaus and vineyards, some going back many centuries then, that were still producing champagne at that time, and gave historic facts and anecdotes about each, even to describing architectural points of interest. It also described many of the associated show more massive vaults and cellars, extending down stories into the earth-- many of them hundreds of years old too. Not being a wine expert myself, I found the descriptions about some of the processes, repeated for various enterprises somewhat tedious, but I learned a lot nonetheless. show less
