This is a fun and quirky cozy mystery that had me smiling off and on and outright laughing a few times.
Jill is trying desperately to succeed as a PI following in her Dad's footsteps but not a lot of jobs are coming her way till the day she is hired to find a serial killer cause the police are ignoring the possibility that their town even has a serial killer.
In the meantime Jill's biological Mom is dying and she is called to the nursing home because she wants to tell Jill something before show more she dies. Prior to this her mother has always rebuffed any attempts on Jill's part to meet and get to know each other. Then on her deathbed she calls Jill a witch. Jill is hurt and disappointed as one would expect.
What follows is a fun awakening for Jill and a mystery that comes full circle. I love the characters which all have different personalities, some cute, some eccentric and some sneaky. I definitely will be reading more of this series. show less

I think these books are legitimately getting better. The plots entwine a tiny bit more and there's far less incidence of the author forgetting rules she established earlier. This one was enjoyable as always, but a total tease in terms of the larger hinted plot.
I decided to reread this book, before starting the rest of the series I hadn't read so far.
This series is so funny, I laugh out loud like some kind of mad man.
Winky the cat is my favorite side character

“What do you mean, you’re leaving? You’re my cat.”
“We’ve been through this already. I’m not your cat. You’re my human. But now, I’ve had a better offer, so I’m moving out.”
“You can’t just leave.”
“Watch me.”

“Err—I have some flowers.”
“So I see.”
“They’re—err—for your—err—cat.”
“Pardon?”
“The flowers are for your cat. Bella, isn’t it?”
“Yes. I have a cat called Bella. You’ve bought her flowers?”
“No. That would be—stupid. No. They’re from Winky.”
“Who?”
“Winky. That’s my cat. He’s only got one eye—hence Winky.”
“Your cat bought flowers for my cat?”
“Well, technically, no. I bought them, obviously, but—I—err—there you go.”
I shoved the flowers into his hand, turned and rushed back to the lift. There was just no good way to explain the crazy.
I'm hooked on this series, and each book has been getting better. The world building has improved, Jill has gotten a bit more character, her sister has become less annoying (though still annoying), and the mysteries are still entertaining. I think Abbott's hitting her stride.
The cliffhanger at the end made me want the next book right away.
Also, I have now realized there is any entire mystery subgenre of cozy witch mysteries. Who knew?
