The first time I read this, many years ago, I didn't get much from it. I suspect I blitzed it in one go during a period of insomnia, and so didn't absorb any of it at all. In fact it is a dark and brooding fantasy that feels hopeless. A hero who doesn't feel like a hero, doesn't want to be a hero, but is forced by his values of humanity and loyalty to strive to defeat an evil that terrifies him. It is a bleak fantasy, very close to horror, but is well written and well characterised. I often show more prefer the older Warhammer fiction with its emphasis on common humanity rather than bombastic heroes, and this is a fine example. show less
Here we have Science Fiction author Brian Stableford writing Warhammer fantasy under a pseudonym.

Stableford completed 3 other Warhammer novels and a number of short stories writing as 'Brian Craig'.

This is a pretty well put together novel, pushing all the right buttons, although the pacing could do with being a little quicker.

A more intelligent entry in the series than many have been. 3.75 Stars.

This is a weird one that doesn't really fit into later Warhammer but still works as a kind of wyrd warhammer. Celtish meets Slaaneshish. This must be the third or fourth time I've read this book but I still couldn't remember what happens. Make of that what you will.
