This historical court case story was so well written! Ella is married and even though the trauma of a terrible event during her childhood still haunts her, she has lived a pretty decent life. Her husband is a well known TB doctor, she does various community events with the ladies and even though the marriage feels pretty loveless, she has a large house and has want for nothing. The guilt of what really happened twenty years ago eats away at a man who has known about it since it happened. show more Although ruled as an accident many rumors have traversed lips that it wasn't an accident after all. Three well known men in the community in a shock are put on trial for murder. The murder of a man that almost everyone knew was no good, so why dredge up the past, wasn't it ruled an accident? As the attorney's on both sides start digging into things, they realize this might just be bigger than they each thought and this is more than just a terrible accident. Corruption from the highest level, erroneous arrests and the truth of what really happened and what led up to it all comes to light in this novel, and it all leads back to Ella's childhood and what happened in those woods. This was so good and I couldn't put it down, it was so realistic it could easily have been based on a true story. I loved that it was told through the various different characters and we get to see their feelings on the various things that happened. Thank you to the publisher and author for the complementary ebook. This review is of my own opinion and accord. show less
This was a wild story! We know from the beginning who the culprit is, which is more than the police and her loved ones do. That aspect really adds a lot to the story. Imagine being friends with someone for over two decades, only to find out that she's a lunatic. Was she always crazy but hid it well? Or did she just snap somewhere along the line?

The whole story smacks of a true crime episode or a Lifetime movie. The author was a true crime reporter and it shows. My only problem with the book show more is the other storyline involving the investigating cop and his wife. It was a whole other book. If that had not been part of the story, this would have been a 4* book for me.

Thank you, NetGalley, for the chance to read and review this book. All opinions expressed are mine and freely given.

Enter Lisa Jamison, the protagonist of A Deadman's Eyes by Lori Duffy Foster. Lisa is a single mom of teen Bridget. Lisa's parents were drug addicts and once Lisa found out she was pregnant, she left home. She never even told the girl's father, Marty, about the pregnancy, plus she never told Bridget who her father is. She has a friend, Dorothy, who has helped her raise Bridget, that lives with her.

Marty is killed though in a drug deal gone bad. Now she has to find out why Marty died, plus show more tell her daughter about him. She knows that Marty did not do drugs and is perplexed as to why he would deal with them. With the help of the Medical Examiner, Alex, they try to piece together what happened.

Not is all as it seems, people, she trusted she can no longer trust. As time goes on, she finds that her daughter and Dorothy are in danger from the killer. She has to race against the clock and once she finds out who the killer is, it may be too late to protect her family.

This is a story that reads fast, there are likable characters and some not-so-likable. I picked up the book and it only took me two sittings to get through it. The plot was well researched, as to the proceeding of the medical examiner, and the procedures of the sheriffs' department. I think that it helped to have the author as a former crime reporter. It always helps to know what you are talking about. Plus the ending surprised me which is what a good book is all about!

What if your best friend for years turns out not to be your best friend at all, actually she's your worst enemy! This occurred in Never Let Go by Lori Duffy Foster. This happened to Emily when she went to lunch with Rachel, her presumably best friend. Rachel kidnapped her and placed her in a room in a basement, keeping her there for months. OMG, what a story a former crime reporter and author weaves! Well worth reading this first standalone novel by Lori Duffy Foster! Thanks to Netgalley and show more the author for this ARC which releases on December 20, 2022! show less
