The plague begins, the seeds for Shewolf and Seawolf are sown and this series is off to a great new start, NYC turns into a battleground as the zombie plague spreads rapidly. Turf battles become deadly as gangs, the police and the BotA struggle to control vaccine production and dissemination. Life becomes cheap, and as the weapons escalate so does the violence. The battle to be the last group to escape the city creates an apt finish to this episode and a nice segue into the next book., show more hopefully soon. If you have not read the others in this series, you should. show less
The latest installment of the Black Tide Rising series picks up again with Tom Smith (not Steve) and the new plotline introduced in book 6. Book 6 started over from the beginning of the zombie apocalypse, so we're back in the early days of just trying to survive. Tom and his small crew have gotten most of the way to their original destination, but not quite all of the way. They now have to deal with infected, criminal overlords and betrayal in their own ranks.
This plotline is not as good as show more the original plotline. It is too pessimistic and too focused on killing. I know, it is a zombie apocalypse, but I read the earlier books for the rebuilding and there's none of that here. show less

This is not really book 5 in the Black Tide Rising series. It goes all the way back to the beginning and tells the story of Tom Smith, who is security for Bank of the Americas. It ends in a predictable place and if you read Black Tide Rising, the short story collection, you've already read some of this. If you really want to continue reading in the series, I'd recommend skipping this one. Nothing wrong with it, just not anything new, either.
Tom and his small group are retreating towards their safe haven set up by the banks. Unknown to them not only are they facing zombies, surviving criminal gangs, and an uprising in the base itself. A good enjoyable read.
