A jagged, turbulent adventure story is framed by ""the politics"" of the period (1745 and the conspiratorial activities against King George) as well as the legendary Weird which shadows Skjarling, a ""wild bit"", on the Scottish coast. The Weird says that there can be no good fortune there until a Ranaldsen ""sets things to rights"" and Alan, the last of the lineage, leaves school with his good friend Davie Lester to that end. Here, on the fog and bog bound island, they run up against the show more only other contender to Skjarling, Alastair, a cousin, and discover the king treasure which has made the island even more coveted by Alastair... Seething with activity from start to finish, along expected lines to satisfy boys who like an old fashioned full-dress adventure story, forsooth in the speechways of the period.
