Who’s in the Ocean (Poke-A-Dot) by Melissa and Doug offers a fun mix of formats. It’s a board book—with thick cardboard pages and rounded edges, as well as a counting book—highlighting the names and symbols for numbers 1-10, but it’s also an interactive book with “click-to-count" buttons inserted on each page. The buttons make a noticeable “click” sound to help children learn to count. Once the buttons are pressed on one page, the buttons on the next are ready to be counted! show more

The illustrations are fun, cartoon-style ocean animals in bright colors and patterns. The images are symmetrical—providing information that matches the words on the page. The backgrounds are colorful and range from deep, blue ocean waves to bright coral reefs.

The words themselves are formatted in simple rhyming couplets, using repetitive, predictable language in the two lines on the first page of each page spread:

“Out in the ocean where the big waves roar,

(Number of) little (creature) love to explore.”

The chosen words on the second page of each spread provide interesting and informative details about the ocean creatures, such as the second page for the octopus:

“They use eight arms to crawl and swim

And can regrow a damaged limb!”

Overall, Who’s in the Ocean (Poke-A-Dot) is a fun, informative way to help your little one learn to count and learn some fun facts about ocean creatures.
