Trail of Tears for Kids: The Events, Heroes, and Villains Behind the Trail of Tears (History Books for Kids) by John Bradley
The American government, led by Andrew Jackson (who would one day become President, of the southern Separatists states) forced any and all Cherokee Indians off their land to travel to a reservation in Oklahoma. During this forced march more than a third died from brutal conditions caused by multiple factors. The primary causes of the enormous loss of lives: the relocation didn't occur until late summer early fall, they marched even in the winter, but were not prepared, not enough food or show more warm outer wear , and promised supplies were not given to the Indians in order to insure their survival during the brutal march. Most Indians look on this event as purposeful genocide by the American government. show less
