Donut Feed the Squirrels is a really cute story about two squirrels, Norma and Belly, who discover a donut truck after being disappointed over burnt pancakes. They then make it their mission to try some of these donuts and bring some back for the other squirrels.

I loved the energy Norma and Belly had, as well as the friendship they shared. They had so much support for each other, which allowed them to have really good communication as well. The illustrations were incredibly well done, and it show more was a very cute drawing style. show less
Oliver the cat longs for a friend who will take afternoon tea with him, oblivious to the presence of Philbert, a tiny mouse living in his apartment, who longs to befriend him and join him for tea. Philbert's many attempts at communication prove futile, until a madcap feline party gone wrong finally makes Oliver aware of his murine roommate. All ends happily, as Oliver and Philbert take tea together...

Although she has illustrated a few other picture-books - Ted Staunton's Harry and Clare's show more Amazing Staycation, Sally Derby's New School Year: Stories in Six Voices - this marks Mika Song's debut as both author and illustrator. I found the story enjoyable, but it was the artwork that had particular appeal for me. Done in watercolor, the illustrations here have a fun sense of humor and whimsy that I really liked. (It probably helps that I love cats!) Recommended to anyone looking for new picture-books about making friends, or wanting to engage in quieter, less frenetic forms of fun. show less
First sentence: So, Norma, what's for lunch?
Well, our choices are: acorn soup, acorn bread, acorn pie, tacos, or acorn salad.
Tacos.
Acorn tacos.
Oh.

Premise/plot: This is the third book in this squirrel food graphic novel series for young readers. The first two books are Donut Feed the Squirrels and Apple of My Pie. Norma and Belly are two of many food-obsessed squirrels we meet in this series. In this one, misadventures [and adventures] center around PIZZA. Will the squirrels get to eat some show more pizza?

My thoughts: I like the series. Each book seems to center on a different food. All seem to be humorous misadventures. I am an overthinker--which I've mentioned before. I do wish these squirrels looked more like squirrels. But I enjoy their food-obsession and their silliness.

When a food truck selling donuts appears on the very same morning that their breakfast gets burnt, squirrels Norma and Belly and their friends hatch a plan to break into the donut truck and have a heist, complete with getaway car (roller skate). They accidentally leave behind a chestnut, which gums up the donut-making machine, but when the cranky donut seller returns and finds the mess, he's inspired to make chestnut-flavored donuts, and all's well that ends well.

An excellent graphic novel show more for beginners. See also: Chick and Brain: Smell My Foot by Cece Bell show less
