The American River is in CA and heads toward Sacramento. The vast majority of the discussion is about gold mining and the forts and stores John Sutter maintained. Writing is OK but a bit repetitious as events go on. The damage caused by gold mining and other mineral mining is described and makes one wonder how CA even survived - my personal opinion.
