Finished this book last night and feel bereft without it! Really loved this read, so vivid, so evocative that it has been haunting my dreams. It is as though I know these people personally, as though I have loved these children. Inspiring, harrowing, beautiful - and important. Top marks.

The beautiful, quirky language and characters in this book captivated and moved me. I laughed, I cried and felt as though I had undertaken a great personal journey, at the conclusion of which I stepped away enlightened. I am now reading it for a second time (very rare for me) and finding even more that moves and inspires me. This book's a Gift!

I was hooked from the beginning. Each chapter is so masterfully constructed that all you want to do is turn the next page. It is so beautifully and poetically written you are transported to another world, and find yourself enlightened by the journey.

A modern classic. I love India and I love this book. A must for anyone with any interest in the Subcontinent, its cultures and peoples. I have already read 'In the Shadow of Crows' twice and found both times equally educational, moving (to tears!) and inspiring. What a story! And what a writer! I want a shelf of books by this man!
