Short biography
Princess Dashkova was a close friend and courtier to the Empress Catherine the Great and took part at age 19 in the 1762 palace coup that brought the latter to power. She was an intellectual who travelled extensively in Europe and met many of the leading figures of the Enlightenment there. After her return to Russia, the empress named her the president of the Imperial Academy of Sciences and Arts -- the first woman to hold such a position in any country.
