Notes from a Battered Grand: A Memoir/Fifty Years of Music, from Honky-Tonk to High Society by Don Asher
Honest, delightful insight into the world of the 1930's through the 1960's from the point of view of an aspiring and then successful pianist (and future author, but he actually never mentions that part of his journey). This is someone that was alert to his world and surroundings for his entire life. His descriptions are occasionally overwrought, or so they seem, until you take the time to disassemble them to understand them (one example, p 133, "A South Sea Island moon hung in the black sky show more over the dark water like a fat Japanese lantern over a mirrored tabletop.") Just for fun, another example from p 278 (referring to the upcoming rock and roll bands of the 1960's), "Out of behemoth speakers the size of small garages the otherworldly roar emerged like voltaic belches from the massed mouths of bottlenosed whales..." You get the idea. It was a fun read, so if you like the challenge of deciphering a memoir, this is for you. Or maybe you just like a good memoir about a topic that you (or I) know little about beforehand. Either way, welcome and come on in. show less
