Deadly Silence (2021) is a good novella by Erik Carter. It is an interesting series introduction of Jake Rowe a former undercover cop who has over time become a silent avenger. Set in New Orleans and Pensacola where gangs run extortion rackets and city leaders play dirty politics. Jake’s undercover name is Tom Hudson. The young cop is busy with police duties involving gang activities. Years later, Jake calls himself Silence Jones “The Quiet Man.” He becomes an assassin protecting the show more innocent victims of criminals and seeking vengeance. Silence Jones is silent because of a throat problem that makes speaking very painful. The disorder is not explained in Deadly Silence, but the reader is directed by the author to continue the series in his novel, The Suppressor. I will continue reading the exciting Silence Jones Action Thriller novels series. show less
This book is number 0.5 in the Silence Jones series, a novella which introduces the character of Silence Jones, the voiceless assassin.

The series is new to me as is the author and the narrator but it sounded like my kind of thriller and I was eager to give it a go. I prefer audiobooks as I rarely get a chance to sit and read but as a van driver I can listen while working, walking, hiking, doing chores etc. so listening suits my needs.

The action starts straight away in this very well written show more story and had me hooked from the first few minutes. The story flits back and forth from today to the past, building a detailed back story for the character as it progresses. This helps the reader get into the mind of Silence Jones for his later endeavours and gives more understanding to who is is and what happened to make him who and what he is today.

The novella is listed as a stand alone thriller but I’d strongly suggest starting with this as some of the next book, book 1, will make more sense if you know the back story.

Anyway, it’s a great start to the series, an interesting and well structured main character and simply put, a great read.

As I’ve said in previous reviews a poor narrator can ruin the best of books but a good narrator can’t save a poor story. The good news is that Gary Bennett, the narrator, gives a stellar performance, giving life to the characters in his reading and is a pleasure to listen to, someone I’d be happy to see listed as the narrator in future.

A solid 5 stars all round for Deadly Silent

Another thrilling book in the Silence Jones series which is fast becoming a favourite. Far from invincible this assassin with a heart heads into another mission that proves more complicated than it first seems.

Great story with excellent narration. I can't wait for book 3.
This book is number 1 in the Silence Jones series, which further introduces the character of Silence Jones, the voiceless assassin.

After reading the prequel novella, Deadly Silent, I immediately dove head first into this book, eager to continue the story of Silence Jones, his background, his training, his missions and his life. The prequel got me hooked and this first novel of the series didn’t let up. Lots of back story and flitting back and forth between today and his beginnings helps show more the reader understand what makes him tick.

There’s action, violence, suspense, vengeance and intrigue as well as a neighbourly blind woman, a constantly drooling cat and a sensory deprivation chamber.

A thrilling story with excellent narration again by Gary Bennett. Brilliant listening.
