I really wanted to review this book because, oh what 30+ years did for the uptick in knowledge about dinosaurs. In the late 1980s, I took a science class about dinosaurs in college (liberal arts major looking for an easy science grade—it wasn’t easy…). The professor did his darnedest to convince us that birds are the surviving dinosaurs. We all laughed. And here it is, a book about the fact the birds are the living descendants of dinosaurs! Needless to say I had a good chuckle but I show more also enjoyed “re-learning” what I learned 30+ years ago and then some. Not too scientific at all and very interesting. show less

Like a lot of people, the Jurassic Park movies sparked my curiosity about dinosaurs. So when I saw this short Audible Original Podcast offered as part of my Audible membership, I easily added it to my library.

Professor Ben Garrod offers a lot of knowledge in just a couple of hours. He teaches listeners what defines a dinosaur, the various kinds of dinosaurs, and what led to their extinction. I was amazed to learn that some dinosaurs had feathers, and birds today are technically considered show more dinosaurs. Ben explains research conducted over the past 40 years that has revealed fascinating discoveries. I’m not going to remember the various long, complicated names of the dinosaurs discussed in this podcast; however, I appreciate learning some new-to-me facts. The ongoing research and discoveries are impressive.

As expected, the quality of this podcast is outstanding. Audible consistently produces top-notch listening experiences with quality interviews, music, and background noise to make the listener feel engaged. It was an enjoyable and informative listen. The author, Ben Garrod, narrates the podcast. Audible also credits Ellie Sans and Clare Chadburn as authors.

I'm giving this one five stars because it did everything I want from non-fiction: it kept me interested, it taught me new things, and it made me want to continue learning about the subject. The interviews included in the audiobook, while making it seem like more of a documentary than a non-fiction book, helped my understanding of dinosaurs and didn't seem like they were just there for production value.*

I did get a bit confused at first when a chapter ended and a new one began, though. There show more was no marker of the new chapter except a long pause and the chapter title changing on my screen. (Which isn't helpful since I'm rarely looking at my screen while listening to an audiobook.) I would have appreciated some additional note saying what chapter we were starting, because each chapter changed topics slightly, and I would have gotten more out of the section if I'd known what the topic was before it actually started. That was a very minor annoyance, however.

* I have noticed a trend with the Audible Originals free monthly books, especially the non-fiction: they seem to feel like adding interviews and sound effects make the book better. (Or possibly just cheaper.) I hope they don't continue this forever, because on the whole the extra effects annoy me. They weren't nearly as annoying in this book as some others, however. show less

Review of the Audible Originals audiobook (2019)

This audiobook is an extension of the So You Think You Know About... Dinosaurs? series by biologist Ben Garrod. That series is geared for 9-12 year olds but takes a scientific tone without dumbing down the subject matter.

The Grown-Up Guide doesn't exclude younger readers/listeners except for the fact that there are no accompanying illustrations to adorn the audio text. Regardless of age, this will likely have most listeners show more googling or searching on Wikipedia for related articles with visual images.

This was still a very entertaining overview of the latest discoveries and speculations about dinosaurs, particularly about how they were the ancestors of birds and that many of them were actually feathered rather than scaly.

A Grown-Up Guide to Dinosaurs was one of the Audible Originals free audiobooks for members in July 2019.
