Pyle, Ellen Bernard Thompson (mother) - Short biography
- An American artist and book illustrator, Walter Pyle, Jr. (1906-1986) was born into one of Delaware's most notable artistic families. His father was Walter Pyle, Sr., the elder brother of celebrated painter and illustrator Howard Pyle, and his mother was the artist and illustrator Ellen Bernard Thompson Pyle. He is noted for a number of murals he painted, including the Shakespeare mural he did in collaboration with Edward Grant, at a school in Smyrna, Delaware. When Pyle lost the blue ribbon in an exhibition at the Wilmington Society of Fine Arts to Caroline Wyeth, the sister of Andrew Wyeth, he gave up painting and devoted himself to chicken farming.
