- Clara Mary Jane or "Claire" Clairmont became a stepsister of Mary Shelley when Mary's father William Godwin married Claire's mother Mary Jane. Claire accompanied Mary and Percy Bysshe Shelley on their elopement in 1814 and their travels around Europe, including to the Villa Diodati on Lake Geneva where Mary conceived the novel Frankenstein. Through them, she met George Gordon, Lord Byron, with whom she had a daughter, Allegra (who died at age 5). Later in life, Claire moved to Italy, and lived for a while in Pisa with Margaret King Moore, Lady Mount Cashell, a childhood pupil of Mary Wollstonecraft.
