This a a history of quite recent history. It follows the series of trade union mergers that led to the formation of Amicus and eventually to Unite the Union. It starts with the 'partnership' model of unions where no-strike agreements would be made with employers in return for single-union recognition, this reached a high point under the Blair government, with Ken Jackson being one of the leading union leaders supporting the model. He was spectacularly defeated in an election battle by Derek show more Simpson, a contest which is treated with some drama in this book. The book follows the creation of Amicus from the EETPU and MSF unions and its own merger with T&G to form Unite. The new model of trade unionism developed under Simpson is more confrontational, but also more international allowing unions to take on mult-national corporations. The book is well researched and illustrated. show less
