The Darkest Bloom was an entertaining read, but ultimately nothing particularly special. The characters, plotting, and progression worked well. The prose was solid and the world building fairly good and well executed with the main aesthetic theme of scent and perfumes both prevalent, varied and immersive.
The main characters are solid and reasonably well executed but come across as somewhat standard: Ash is stern, brooding, honorable, and tormented by a dark secret, and show more Rakel is tough and spunky. They're good achetypes, and decently executed, but the characters fail to tangibly rise above those archetypes and thus to really add much to the book in of themselves.
The plot itself is simple but effective, using a variety of challenges and fantastical locations to elevate what is essentially a series of fetch quests tied together with a riddle into something entertaining and varied. The core emotional drive behind the plot, I.E what our characters want/fear to lose, is strong and allowed for me to easily invest in the narrative.
I have few actual criticisms for the book, and they're so minor as to not be worth mentioning. show less

around scent, which is a unique concept that I haven’t heard before in YA. The main characters are
likeable and interesting to follow as they go on their journey together. The story is told in multiple points

Der Vater von Rakel ist krank. Rakel hat eine besondere Gabe, sie kann Düfte unterscheiden wie kaum ein anderer. Sie weiß wie sie ihrem Vater helfen kann, aber dazu braucht sie die göttliche Dahkai-Essenz, die alle hundert Jahre zu einer bestimmten Zeit aus einer kleinen weißen Blume gewonnen wird. Leider gibt es diese Blume nur in den Gärten des Kaisers von Aramtesch. Als sie dort ankommt, findet sie den Thronfolger Prinz Nisai vergiftet vor. Sie gerät in Verdacht. Um den Prinzen zu show more retten, muss sie ein Gegenmittel finden. Aber auch das Reich wird von einer dunklen Macht bedroht.
Mir hat diese Geschichte ebenso gut gefallen wie der Schreibstil und ich hebe auch gut in die Geschichte hineingefunden. Aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven gewinnen wir einen guten Überblick. Das Cover hat mich als erstes angezogen.
Die Charaktere sind gut dargestellt. Rakel ist eine Person, die weiß was sie will und dafür würde sie auch mit dem Kopf durch die Wand gehen. Um ihrem Vater zu helfen, geht sie eine Menge Risiken ein. Ihr zur Seite steht Ash, der ein Leibwächter des Thronfolgers ist. Er muss seinen Herrn retten und daher hilft er Rakel. Er trägt aber auch ein Geheimnis mit sich herum, dass es unter allen Umständen zu bewahren gilt. Natürlich kommt es, wie es kommen muss, die beiden werden sich immer sympathischer. Doch das wird nicht übertrieben.
Natürlich wird es spannend, es gibt Geheimnisse, Intrigen und Dramatik. Daneben gibt es aber auch gefühlvolle Augenblicke.
Der Cliffhanger am Ende ist richtig gemeine, denn man will unbedingt wissen, wie es weitergeht, aber leider müssen wir noch auf den nächsten Band warten.
Das Buch hat mir gefallen und ich bin schon gespannt auf die Fortsetzung. show less
