Short biography
Carl Irving Wheat was a lawyer, an historian of California and the American West, and a historical cartographer with a particular interest in early maps of the region and was responsible for a number of seminal works on cartography in the American West. He was also a collector of books and manuscripts, a founder of the Roxburghe Club of San Francisco, and an active member of E Clampus Vitus, the Bohemian Club, and the Zamarano Club. Wheat edited the journal of the California Historical Society, and was close friends with the eminent Western bibliographer Henry R. Wagner.
