This little book has been a remarkable help to students of Chinese history for decades. Without going into detail on the contents of the book I will merely praise Derk Bodde for his great success in increasing appreciation for the rich contributions China has provided to world civilization in the West and beyond. I cannot recall a small book that I cherished more after reading it the first time. I show more have referred to it with greater pleasure from time to time over a period of nearly fifty years.
