Fictionalised account of the early life of Sarah Forbes Bonetta, the african girl who was saved from slavery in West Africa and 'gifted' to Queen Victoria, becoming Queen Victoria's godchild.
The author has worked extensively with the historical records but there is little known about Sarah's early life so an older sister has been invented and the two lives have been told in parallel.
A powerful read, filling a gaping hole in historical fiction about black lives in history. I thoroughly show more enjoyed it but have taken off half a star for the ending - read it and you may (or may not!!) agree. Highly recommend. show less
