Short biography
Kevin Boland (1917-2001) was an Irish Government Minister and former TD in Dáil Eireann for the Fianna Fáil party. His father, Gerald, had also been a TD and Minister for the party. Boland held several Ministerial posts including Defence, Social Welfare and Local Government. He was a Minister from 1957-70 until he resigned in sympathy due to the sacking of two of his colleagues as a result of the Arms Crisis which would result in the Arms Trial. These events threatened to split Fianna Fáil and Boland challenged the then leader, Jack Lynch at the subsequent party conference. Having been unsuccessful he founded a new party which failed electorally.

Well-written and argued, as I re-read this book in 2009, it is very prescient. If a political party divests itself of the majority of its founding principles and beliefs, even if done for largely pragmatic reasons, how can it hope to enthuse its organisation? Boland was a dour man, but an utterly principled one, although I disagree with him over certain issues. As I write this in 2009, a month after Fianna Fáil has had its worst ever historical election result, many of his suggestions here show more are worthy of re-appraisal and people like Boland are needed to re-build the party from the ground up.

I should also identify myself as both a supporter and a member of the fore-mentioned party should any readers be interested.
