A 2003 look at surviving narrow gauge railways in Austria. Gorgeous colour photography throughout. Sadly, nothing remains unchanged, and Austrian narrow gauge railways are no exception. Writing in 2020, we have lost the bulk of the Ybbstalbahn, the Thörlerbahn, a section of the Feistritztalbahn, the Hohenbahm Reißeck, and the Florianerbahn. The Gurktalbahn is moribund, and the Achenseebahn is under threat because of the combined efforts of local politics and the COVID-19 pandemic. Much of show more the classic traction illustrated in the book has now passed on.
On the other hand, the future of the Mariazellerbahn now looks more secure (though possibly at the expense of other secondary lines that are less attractive), and this has enabled their supporters group, Club 399, to look seriously at reviving the Krumpe as a heritage line; NÖVOG are retaining the Waldviertel system for tourist services; and the Pinzgau and Zillertal lines are both thriving under their respective managements. show less
