Aster is a bit like Hilda (Luke Pearson) in reverse: her parents move their family from the city to the country, and Aster is NOT happy about it. Her older brother Reed leaves for a few weeks, and her mom is busy working on a bird robot to avert some of the disastrous effects of the upcoming "great migration." Meanwhile, Aster goes exploring and finds trouble (or it finds her). She meets Granny (spoiler alert: Queen of Summer), a talking dog called Buzz, a cranky fox (spoiler alert: King of show more Autumn), and the three Chestnut Knights (Aster's dad is a huge fan).

This inventive book is in two parts: Aster Makes Some Poorly Thought-Through Wishes and Aster Gets A Magical Fox Exceedingly Upset. Each part is preceded and followed by a map, with different markings that show Aster's changing feelings about her new home.

This books was a super cute fantasy series that has two different stories mixed into it. The first focuses on an ancient migration of birds and a trickster spirit. The second is about the King of Autumn and the other seasons in the Valley. It was a nice story and Aster is such an interesting character. She is very realistic, having not wanted to move and then eventually learning about her new home and the magic it holds.
Cute -- cute book, cute images, same heartwarming pseudo-Scandinavia as Hilda. In general, I liked it. I think Hilda does a better job connecting into mysterious mytho-natural phenomena, but I do love the seasonal theme going on here.
Aster reminds me a bit of Hilda, if Hilda hated the woods and loved the city. Aster's parents pull a really low move, and lie to her about how long they are really staying in this tiny village in the middle of nowhere. When her brother leaves for college she can't believe how bored she is...until a strange glow in the night that she sees from her window leads her to a pack of shaggy dogs and lots of magical weirdness (good weirdness).
