Orphaned by an unexplained massacre of indigenous people in the Tierra del Fuego region of South America, young Esteban flees to a nearby port to seek employment on a whaling ship his mother once told him about. He aspires to become a harpooner as he learns about the whaling industry on a sailing ship at a time when steamships are starting to arrive and change the way things are done. He also tries to crack the hard veneer of the vessel's tight-lipped captain.

In the year 1900, the captain of the sailing vessel Leviathan decides to strike a blow against the infringement of steamships into traditional whaling operations, but things backfire and the entire crew is in jeopardy as they end up on the run through treacherously icy waters.
Must get next volume soon to see how the cliffhanger is resolved.

A quick read, being a 48-page graphic novel set in early 18th century France. It has gothic overtones which I enjoyed, and reviews of the series say it develops something of an historical X-Files feel.
This introductory book sets up Jean-Baptiste Poulain as the the titular Marquis d'Anaon which, "Spooky Mulder" style, means The Marquis of Lost Souls!
I wasn't completely blown away, but at 3.5⭐, I'll get the next in the series, at least.
