Born in Chillicothe, Ohio, he attended Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio and transferred to Harvard University. He graduated from the Harvard Law School in 1841 and was admitted to the bar in Ohio. He commenced to practice in Cincinnati, Ohio and became a prominent attorney. He was elected to Cincinnati City Council in 1848 and served one term. He held several notable positions including Dean of the Cincinnati Law School, a member of the Cincinnati Board of Education from 1851 to 1866, president of the University of Cincinnati from 1860 to 1866, and director of Spring Grove Cemetery from 1878 to 1891. He declined nomination by Governor John Brough as a Judge of the Ohio Supreme Court in 1864. He was also one of the founders of the Public Library of Cincinnati and a member of the Ohio State Constitutional Convention in 1873. He died in Cincinnati in 1891 when he was 73 years old.
